My Sports Affiliations

When you were a small child, i am sure you can remember people around you cheering for various teams. Sometimes you grasped onto those affiliations, and sometimes you completely rebel and cheer for another team.

Over the years, as I have moved from Ilinois to Minnesota and then onto Detroit, people have asked who I cheer for. They assume that I will root for the home team, but due to my ties, i can’t turn my back on the teams that I cheer for. So here, tonight, i will share with you all some useless information about the teams that i cheer for.

Chicago Bears

First you will find the Chicago Bears, the monsters of the midway. This is one team that I have been a fan for as long as I can remember. Back in 1985, I was 8 years old and I remember cheering for them, watching games, and ultimately enjoying the Super Bowl Shuffle

In the pride of all Bears fans, we bleed blue, can handle the cold winds of soldier field (even though i have never been to a bears game at Soldier Field- yes it is a crime and very saddening. )

Chicago Cubs

Wrigleyville, Wrigley Stadium, Harry Caray, the ivy wall in the outfield all depict a sport well rounded in tradition. I still remember sunday afternoons of watching the Cubs games on WGN while my dad moved in and out of sleep in his lazy boy chair. Growing up 2.5 hours south of chicago, you found allegiance with either the Cubs or the Cardinals.

My first trip to Wrigley Field was about 7 years ago with my childhood best friend. We took the train to downtown Chicago from the burbs. We sat 13 rows from the field, right by Third Base. That sunday was a clear, sunny hot day in the middle of June. It was perfect.

Minnesota Twins

Do you remember the World Series seasons of 1987 and 1991? This was my first connection with the Minnesota Twins. My grandparents lived in Minneapolis for most of my childhood and this was one of our top vacation spots. I would receive Christmas gifts of World Championship Wheaties Boxes, homer hankies, foam fingers and bunches of memorabilia. This began my run as a Twins fan. While I cheer for the Cubs, they are a National League team and the Twins are an American league team; plus if we are completely honest, what are the chances of them ever meeting in the world series??

I also went to college in Minneapolis, 4 blocks from the Metrodome and had the chance to attend many games throughout my years living there.

I also pull for the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago Blackhawks, and when they are not playing the hawks, i’ll watch the RedWings.. i mean come on.. such heritage there!

So there’s the story… i hope it clears up all of your concern!
